Old audio tapes must be baked before they are loaded on to a machine, this helps eliminate damage to both the tape and the machine. The baking process is precision temperature controlled and will withdraw any moisture that has gathered in the emulsion which will cause it to stick to the tape deck transport mechanisms. It also theoretically reactivates the chemical binders of the emulsion so that the oxide is less likely to shed from the substrate. Larger tapes take longer to bake and are priced accordingly.
